Quite a lean February for me in watching Asian movies. Hope to make it up this month.

I really liked Eyes of the Spider. The surreal elements and goofy sense of humour it has are the type of things that I’m addicted to.
How bad was Cult?. I remember thinking it looked like a decent low-budget J-horror.
License to Live really blew me away. It’s light-hearted but heartfelt and emotional and the family ties. I love Kurosawa’s horror films but this one and Tokyo Sonata prove that he’s brilliant at drama. Yakusho and Nishijima give excellent performances.
Cult starts out quite brightly but once it tries to become a cheap imitation of Paranormal Activity it goes downhill fast. The introduction of a cocky young exorcist character just makes things worse and the less said about the terrible special effects the better. The plot ends up being a right mess. I usually enjoy movies by Koji Shiraishi but this is far from his best. If there’s a sequel to the movie (and it looks to me that there will be as it ends on a cliffhanger) I just hope it’s better than this one.
